After working 38 years with Harding University, Lou chose early retirement as a Professor of Communication to work full-time with CfCB. He also opted for early social security benefits so he could work for CfCB without the burden of being paid a salary. He remains on an unpaid status with CfCB.

He has also served as pulpit minister, deacon and youth director in various churches in Arkansas, Mississippi and Indiana. For 20 years he served as pulpit minister for the Remmel church in Newport, Arkansas, 11 of which he has also served as an elder. Under his tenure the church grew from just over 30 to nearly 200 in weekly attendance, which Butterfield attributes to “The work of the Holy Spirit, a lot of prayer and dedicated workers.” Butterfield continues to be a columnist for the Newport Independent, where his weekly articles have appeared for over eleven years. He presently serves as one of the Shepherds at the Downtown church of Christ in Searcy. He is a sought after speaker on church growth and on the dangers of Internet pornography.

Butterfield received his Doctorate in Educational Technology from Texas Tech University in 1989. His dissertation was an in depth study of the Amazing Grace Bible Class, a national television program produced by the Madison Church of Christ in Madison, Tennessee. Prior to this he received both his Master of Science (74) and his Educational Specialist Degree (75) from Indiana University in Instructional Technology. His B.A. was granted by Harding University in Bible and speech (69) and he studied for one year at the Harding School of Bible and Religion in Memphis, Tennessee.

In addition to his work with Harding and CfCB, Butterfield owned Butterfield Productions, a sole proprietorship, from which he wrote numerous national, regional and local advertising and marketing campaigns, produced numerous corporate videos and wrote and produced many radio spots.
